I was recently asked if I would photograph animals in my studio. I said that I wouldn’t rule it out but I did say it wasn’t my main focus. I grew up with lots of animals, and had cats, boxers, a poodle, a couple of Irish wolfhounds, goats, chickens and ducks, as well as the more standard fish as pets while I was growing up. I also spent many hours horse riding and always longed to have my own horse. As an adult I’ve been a bit more unusual, and have only had a boa constrictor as a pet.
Despite my upbringing I haven’t really taken on the love of animals that others of my family have. I’m much happier spending time with children than animals. I’ve spent many weeks helping run residential kids camps for pre teens and, while not a relaxing holiday, it was always fun. I also spent many Sundays showing 8-10 year olds that church isn’t boring. In 2006 I was blessed with my first child. I have since been kept busy with the arrival of three more children, and have enjoyed more than my fair share of toddler groups, play dates and baby cuddles.
They always say “never work with children or animals”. I don’t necessarily understand animals, but I do love being with children. Trying to capture the fun of childhood is a great way to spend time. While a photo shoot doesn’t always go to plan when children are involved, it should be fun, and great photos can be taken, even if the children aren’t in their best mood.
