Our Summer holidays ended today with our youngest son starting school. He was very excited, and we took the mandatory pictures of him and his siblings all looking smart and ready for school. I think that is the first formally posed shot I have taken of my children since last term, as over the summer holidays our family photos have been much more spontaneous, trying to capture some of the fun we have had over the summer.
I love a mix of studio shots and informal shots, as they play a different role. For me the studio shots focus entirely on the child, and on our walls the photos are studio shots, which capture a point in time of their development, but don’t commemorate any particular event. However, each year we create hard-backed yearbooks, and in those we try to include many more photos showing the things we have done during the year. Our kids love looking at those books, and it gives us a chance to say “do you remember…” I sometimes find our boy who has just started school has snuck into our bedroom at his bedtime, and has fallen asleep in my bed looking at the book from the year he was born.
They grow up so fast!
